“Not a Piece of Furniture” – a short story

BRYANT LITERARY REVIEW

Janis is a hard-working undocumented immigrant from Latin America. Shortly after her husband gets deported, she begins a job cleaning house for a wealthy white couple who treat her like a piece of furniture. She manages to cope with their lack of respect but nevertheless is not satisfied with her role.

Things change when Janis meets a young mother named Maria, who is in desperate need of support at home after her husband unexpectedly passes away.
